Italian and European Patent and Design Attorney

Silvia Mati was admitted to the Italian Patent Attorney Bar in 2006 and to the European Patent Attorney Bar in 2008. She is therefore qualified to represent clients in patent and design matters before the Italian Patent and Trademark Office (UIBM), the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and the European Patent Office (EPO). In 2016, she obtained the qualifications required to represent parties before the Unified Patent Court (UPC) and is currently listed as an official UPC representative.
Ms. Mati began her career as a patent attorney following professional experience in a company operating in the data communications sector. She has developed strong expertise in intellectual property through extensive work with international clients, particularly in the fields of electronics and mechanics. Her experience includes the prosecution of patent applications as well as the defense and opposition of patents in proceedings before the European Patent Office.
She regularly represents clients in nullity and infringement proceedings before the Italian courts and has gained substantial expertise in advising clients and drafting legal opinions on both contentious and non-contentious IP matters. This expertise has been further strengthened through her long-standing collaboration with a renowned international IP law firm.
Ms. Mati holds a degree in Electronic Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Milan, with a specialization in microelectronics. She completed her thesis work at the Institut für Technische Elektronik at RWTH Aachen University (Germany). She also completed postgraduate studies in economic sciences at RWTH Aachen, obtaining qualifications in both electronic and management engineering.
Ms. Mati has lectured in preparatory courses for the Italian patent and trademark attorney examination. Since 2020, she has been an appointed member of the EPO Examination Committee for the European Qualifying Examination (EQE-ECIII). She is also a member of the German association VPP (Vereinigung von Fachleuten des Gewerblichen Rechtsschutzes – Association of Intellectual Property Experts).
